Automatic Writing: How To

You may decide to keep a special journal just for your automatic writing!

Automatic writing is excellent for: achieving complexity in spirit communication, getting that “channel” open (not just during writing, but all the time), achieving honesty, re-framing your thoughts and re-training your patterns of thinking.

Simple How-To:

  1. Meditate: Let yourself into a relaxed mind space. Slow your racing thoughts and get out of your frontal brain processes. The most common and probably best way to do this is through meditation.

  2. Manifest: Move that mind state on to the paper. Write your mantra for the week/meditation, write a simple statement about your breath a few times, or write something else that reflects the calm state of mind you are in and your openness to positive communication from spirit. Example from Michael Sandler's book: Thank you, universe, for guiding me with your love and light." His focus is on gratitude.

  3. Invoke: Invoke the entities that you want to communicate with through writing to them. For example, you can write "I call down all my angels. I invoke my guides…" or "Good morning, angels. Good morning, guides." We suggest communicating with only positive, supportive entities (angels, guides, higher self) because of the way that automatic writing can shape your brain and thoughts.

  4. Intend: Set an intention by writing a question that is open-ended and non-binary. This establishes your practice in the necessary mind state of just being curious. You won't filter the messages you receive or try to interpret meanings in the moment. You are establishing a non-judgmental atmosphere. Examples of questions are: "What messages do you have for me today?" "What is spirit trying to say through me?"

  5. Write: Write and don't stop writing, even if don’t think you have anything to say. Write even if you are writing nonsense or writing “I am writing, I am waiting.” We don't want to filter anything at this point. Even if you see your ego coming through, give it space and then the spirit messages will come through after a few breaths. Write until you feel like you've gotten the message.

Steps to Improving your Automatic Writing:

  2. Set a regular time to do automatic writing, so that it feels more like a ritual.

  3. Experiment with the best place and times to do automatic writing to reduce distractions, increase comfort levels, and decrease external stimuli (light and sound).
